UBIMET
UBIMET is based in Vienna and was founded in 2004 as subsidiary of the meteomedia PLC. Since 2008 UBIMET is an independent company, which has become the largest private provider of meteorological services in Austria. The UBIMET team consists of 40 experts in the fields of meteorology, IT, geography and geoinformatics. The company's main area of expertise lies in the field of meteorology, specifically in developing forecast models and issuing weather forecasts and severe weather warnings with high temporal and spatial resolution, as well as in preparing data and forecasts tailored to suit individual customer requirements.
UBIMET operates the Severe Weather Centre (www.unwetterzentrale.at), which issues forecasts and warnings using the unique concept of small-scale, individually deduced, meteorological regions. The success of the Severe Weather Centre (250.000 private customers and 60% of the Austrian communities) is based on models and systems developed by UBIMET. These systems allow individualised severe weather warnings, detailed down to single postal code areas, and include a statistical point forecast system (MM-MOS), the severe weather warning system WIND (weather information on demand), and INDUS (individualised, nowcasting-based disaster and storm warning system). INDUS was elected the winning project of the competition "Safe & Secure Vienna 2006" of the Centre for Innovation and Technology (ZIT) in the area Research & Development. Additionally, UBIMET received the "Mercur-Price for the most innovative service" of the year 2006 by the Chamber of Commerce of Vienna for the severe weather warning system WIND IV.
The UBIMET expert team has access to all national weather observation data worldwide, as well as to the most dense private weather station network in Europe. Additionally, real-time observation data, information from international computer models, and satellite and weather radar data from all parts of the world are received and processed round the clock in the UBIMET data centre. With its high operative capability, UBIMET is the only private weather service provider in Austria that has the ability to cover the entire demand for high-resolution weather forecasts, be it automated products, severe weather warnings or expert advice.
The clientele of UBIMET includes print and broadcast media, insurance companies, infrastructure operators, municipalities, and individuals.
